The British Columbia Councils for Families (BCCF) has claimed that Parents, academicians and experts all agree that parenting is one of the most challenging roles one can have. Although great attention has always been allotted to understanding the effect of parenting on a child’s development, BCCF observes that less attention has been paid on the factors that influence the parent’s own sense of well-being.  Also noted by the BCCF further is that because of the strong links that will be developed during child development, it often the case that the stress and sense of satisfaction with their parenting skills are intertwined, and should be a key point to children and family researchers. Chronic stress and depression may reflect problems in parenting, as reported by a new study conducted at the University of Rochester.


 Also in the study done by University of Rochester it is further shared that the view that mothers suffering from depression and anxiety disorders may be oversensitive and highly reactive, while mothers who struggle financially or live in high-crime neighborhoods were more capable of paying no attention to their children.  It has also been found out that the psychosocial stressors (poverty and depression) interrupt the body’s stress response. As a result, mothers become more sensitive, hostile, intrusive or neglectful toward their children.


 For those parents who need advice on how to deal with their stress and anxiety problems, medical help is usually provided to them. Doctors often prescribe psychotherapy or oral medication, like antidepressant Paxil, for example, to aid the patients in coping with their family issues.


 However there have been numerous medical reports stemming from thousands of Paxil users, along with results of research studies, have shown that Paxil may potentially bring more harm then benefits. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued various public health advisories stating that Paxil side effects may increase suicide risks and may also cause birth defects to newborns.


Other reported Paxil side effects include sexual dysfunction, psychosis, delusion, hallucination, memory loss, sleeping problems, eating disorders, abnormal personality changes, unusual mood shifts, irritability, hostility, self-harm and other acts of violence.   Parents who are dealing with any of the above side effects should be aware of them since they may cause damage to themselves and family members.


 To begin preparing for becoming a parent, it would be advised that adequate knowledge and having ample support from a social group would be best.  It is also important that if either the mother or the father of the child is experiencing the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety attacks that they seek medical attention as it could affect the parent-child relationship.


As for parents taking antidepressants, it is safe for them to consider that a number of Paxil lawsuit filed against its manufacturer implies that antidepressants may not be the best way to deal with their problems.  Consult with a doctor for more information on safer alternatives to antidepressants.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and at the same time, a stimulant but only in smaller amounts.  The main ingredient of alcohol is ethyl alcohol or “invinoveritus” in Latin which means “in wine, there is truth”.   The concentration of alcohol in the body determines its effect.  It can interrupt normal body functions as well as the person’s judgment and gait depending on the amount of alcohol intake.   Alcohol can heighten the effects of a drug if taken concurrently, Paxil and alcohol.

Alcohol effect and blood alcohol concentration (BAC) have a positive relationship.   As the BAC increases, the extent f the effects also increases although this may vary among individuals.  After a small intake of alcohol, one can be talkative and be more confident. Slurring of speech, impairment of visual attention, unbalanced gait, slowed reflexes and nausea and vomiting happens once the BAC increases to a higher level.  Once the blood concentration in the body reaches a “high-risk state”, user can no longer walk without assistance and may show loss of bladder control.  The end result may be unconsciousness and failure to remember latest activities. The short-term side effects of alcohol are not permanent and go away once the level of alcohol subsides. 

Grave medical crisis may result from extreme alcohol intake.  Examples of which are liver damage, heart damage, digestive system disorders like stomach ulcers and high blood pressure and stroke.  While the effects may not happen instantly, they can make a great disturbance on one’s life.  In addition to health problems, excessive alcohol consumption can also affect family relationship, finances and work that may destroy one’s life. 

In order to minimize the health risk when drinking alcohol, it is good to have a full stomach before drinking for this delays alcohol absorption.   To minimize the effects of hangover, it is wise to drink water or other non-alcoholic alternatively with alcohol. Also, don’t drink alcohol when you are taking prescription drugs especially drugs that have depressant effects.

As a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, Paxil is approved by the FDA to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder and post traumatic stress disorder in adults.   Managing these conditions was proven by the drug.   But there have been reports of users having side effects.   The extent of the side effects was either minor or major in severity. The digestive system seems to be affected most by the drug.  Several users of the drug claims to have experienced diarrhea that lasted for a few days.

Diarrhea describes frequent bowel movements that are loose and watery.  Diarrhea can be complicated or uncomplicated, depending on its symptoms.   Uncomplicated diarrhea has symptoms like thin or loose stools, abdominal cramping, watery stools, sense of urgency, and nausea and vomiting.  Complicated diarrhea, on the other hand, has the same symptoms but accompanied with fever, presence of blood, mucus or undigested food on the stool and weight loss.   Consult a health care provider should any of these effects persist.

In most instances, diarrhea last only for a week.  Before it totally disappears, symptoms are managed in some ways.   Dehydration resulting from diarrhea with vomiting can be managed with drinking plenty of fluids.   Special dehydration drinks can be used to help manage electrolyte imbalance in diarrhea.  Eating bananas, rice, apple, and toast (BRAT) while having diarrhea is also advised by doctors. . This has been used for decades to treat diarrhea.   Drinking fluids in between, not during, meals is also recommended so as to prevent vomiting.
